Have you ever had the strong temptation to give up because you didn't see the progress in what you are trying to accomplish? Maybe it was working on a special project, earning a degree, having a happy marriage, losing weight, or even getting out of debt. What's especially challenging is the fact that we live in a fast-paced instant gratification world where everything just about seems to have to happen right now! I know I've been challenged with these temptations especially in the area of my business. I've questioned at times is it worth it? Will I ever see results? Is it worth the time, effort, and energy I'm putting in?
Recently I read a fascinating article about the Chinese Bamboo Tree. I read in the article that the seed is planted in the ground and the planter waters and fertilizes it but sees no immediate results. A year goes by, two years, three even four years with the planter continually watering and nurturing the ground where the seed was planted with no results. In the fifth amazingly something special happens. The tree breaks through the ground and miraculously grows about 80 feet in six weeks!!! I learned some valuable lessons from this tree.
1. Success is a process. It is the progressive realization of a worthy idea or goal.
2. Although you don't see the results above ground, growth and development is happening under ground to be able to support the weight and height of the tree as it grows above ground. We may not see immediate results above the surface, but what's happening beneath the surface is development of character, purpose, and integrity to be able to handle success when it occurs.
3. Consistency and persistence pays off. The planter continues to water and nourish the same ground where the seed is planted even when it seems futile to do so. Sticking to the regime of going to the gym, continuing on with the project even in the midst of discouragement, staying up late nights studying, continually being present for your spouse even in difficult moments, being intentional about what you eat, staying focused on getting out of debt, saving and building wealth pays off in the end.
Reading about the Chinese Bamboo Tree has renewed my focus on my dreams, goals, and even my business. It has caused me remember and live by the old saying, "Good things come to those who wait". I've also learned in this process that it's better to do it slow and right rather than fast and wrong. So I want to encourage you today.....KEEP GOING!! Don't give up on your dreams! Don't give up on your goals! Reflect on this old poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that is as true today as it was when he wrote it over 100 years ago:
“The heights by great men reached and kept
Were not attained by sudden flight,
But they, while their companions slept,
Toiled ever upward through the night.”
With faith and persistence....your tree of success awaits you!!!!
